What Products Should I Use?

My hair is very dry, and I’m in search of the right products for my hair type. What products or ingredients do you recommend?

BFH answer: It’s both easy and hard to answer a general question like that. The easy answer is: For dry hair, purified water is the best ingredient to use. Products with high contents of water, or even water alone, can do the trick of getting strands to a hydrated state. However, the case may be far from that simple.

For instance, let’s say you already use products with high water contents in them, yet your hair is still dry. What’s the deal?

It can be pretty tough for another to figure out unless they observed your daily regimen, lifestyle, hair maintenance habits, and environment. And though you may not have considered this, hair may not truly be as dry as you think it is.

Some questions to ask yourself:

Product regimen: Are you using products that contain ingredients which prevent water from absorbing into your strands or scalp? For example, mineral oil and silicones are well-known water blockers. (On the upside, they prevent water from evaporating quickly.) Thus, even if you use products with high water contents, you can’t be sure that the moisture is making it to your strands unless you’re apply products in an appropriate order.

Lifestyle/Health: Has your diet been consistent in appropriate nutrition, including the protein and water necessary for healthy hair and skin cell growth? Are you taking medications that cause any dietary deficiencies? Do your daily lifestyle habits include those that might affect your hair, such as rubbing against car headrests or constantly playing with your hair?

Hair maintenance habits: Do you have any habits that cause wear on your hair, such as tugging, tightly tying or pinning, or roughly brushing hair? Do you lie on a silk or satin pillow case or use a scarf at night? Do you use chemicals that are harsh on hair? Do you protect hair from heat?

Environment: Is your environment dry, hot, or sunny? Is it windy, such that small particulate matter could be abrading strands? Are there heavy pollutants in the air? Are you doing anything to protect your hair during extreme weather conditions?

Is my hair truly dry? Interestingly, it can also be the case that your strands aren’t truly dry. They could even be temporarily dry. Is your hair brittle and breaking off? If so, then you know your strands are truly dry. If not, they may simply be temporarily dry due to a change in environment or needing some moisture refreshing. You might be used to the feel of an emollient oil on your hair making you think that your hair is moisturized. Some oils actually feel dry, which can be why at times some people think that their strands are dry even though they’ve applied oil.

Assess the above questions, and you may begin to see your strands from a broader view. Feel free to ask us further questions!
