Hard Water and Desert Climate

I’ve recently moved from East Texas, where the water is soft, to West Texas, where the water is hard, and weather is extremely dry with little or no humidity. I’ve been natural for almost 4 years and knew my hair’s likes and dislikes. Since I’ve moved I have hit a brick wall and my hair is suffering. I’ve always done the conditioner-only method with an occasional shampoo (including shampoo bars), and any kind of natural conditioner or leave-in, but the method no longer works. What products from your line do you suggest for hard water and desert climates?

Undeniably, strands are likely to go through challenges with the huge change from soft to hard water. Hard water contains high levels of calcium, magnesium and iron, that coat your hair, causing it to become drier.

Getting a water softener or filter/purifier would be ideal, though, as well, you can use store-bought water when washing your strands, or use a demineralizing product weekly, such as a clarifying/chelating shampoo (look for products with the ingredient EDTA, for example, which helps lifts minerals). Products with natural salts in them will also help remove the mineral buildup. You might try rotating between a gentle cleansing and sulfate cleanser routine every other wash, for example.

While using filtered (or even boiled) water will always be the best solution, you can also try natural ingredients such as lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda rinses to help remove the mineral deposits. Especially when using water throughout the week aside from cleansing/conditioning, make sure to use purified water if you tend to use a spray bottle during the week to moisturize.

Finally, keeping your strands conditioned is a must – you may find that you’ll want to condition more frequently than your previous routine. At Bear Fruit Hair, our focus is on not just products as the solution to hair concerns, but we like to look at the overall factors to help determine changes that we have the power to control for optimum health of strands. To answer your initial question, most of our conditioners are formulated to moisturize the driest hair types and in dry environments, so you’re likely to find high moisture in just about any product you choose.
